I’d been hearing a lot about Texas based Buc-ee’s, so when we decided to visit Florida in April 2021 we made it a priority to stop and visit their two new stores. If you’ve never heard of Buc-ee’s, it’s basically a Stuckey’s on steroids, with a huge shopping area, and tons of gas pumps.
It’s been around for awhile
It was founded in 1982 with 39 locations so far. Additional locations are coming to South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee. We visited two locations on our trip, the St. Augustine one, and also the Daytona Beach one, both right off of I-95. And I have to say that we were blown away at how large the stores were.
Don’t rely on social distancing
At least in the Florida stores, be aware that there really isn’t a lot of social distancing, and many people do not wear masks. This didn’t bother us, but it may bother some. For me it was a refreshing change to be “almost normal”.
So, what is Buc-ee’s? And what do they sell?
What can you find at Buc-ee’s? Just about everything. Some of it was like a Cracker Barrel, with pretty country crafts and plenty of jams, jellies, and other unusual food items, such as pickled garlic. Part of it is a Buc-ee’s souvenirs in all shapes and forms, from stuffed animals, to T-shirts and hats, to Christmas ornaments. And then you have lots of packaged food with the Buc-ee’s brand. Jerkies, taffies, and all kinds of candy.
Plus, there is a Deli in the store, and coffee, drink, and food counters. And lots of them. There is no indoor seating, so you have to take it to go. The sandwiches are made fresh and put under a warming light for customers to pick up. Grab yours and take it to the cashier with all your other purchases. Try the Brisket sandwich. It’s delicious! There are also computer screens where you can order custom made food items. I do wish that Buc-ee’s would put some picnic tables outside in the grass where you could sit and eat. We ate in our car.

Clean restrooms!
I have to say that the restrooms were remarkable. Very clean and plenty of secure stalls. The sinks are separated, and there is plenty of room to move around. I’ve heard that they are the cleanest bathrooms of any convenience store. And they have a doggy park outside so Fido won’t have to wait to do his business. Plus, it looks like they pay very well!
And plenty of gas pumps
Once outside you’ll find gas pumps galore. There were plenty of empty pumps when we were there, and no waiting. Prices were comparable with surrounding gas stations. There are no stations for Semi-trucks, but there was Diesel gas.
And there you have it! Buc-ee’s is definitely a destination in itself. Be sure to stop if you happen to be in the area. You won’t regret it.
